Holistic Healing is a philosophy that believes in treating the whole person and in the integration of mind, body and spirit. These three elements of a human being must be treated together in order to achieve any notion of ‘healing,’ rather than simply treating a person for a specific illness or injury.

Information about Alternative Holistic Healing

In an age where people increasingly turn to holistic healing methods, it is important to understand the basics and benefits of various alternative healing practices available.

History

Alternative healing practices have an ancient history dating back thousands of years, well before the arrival of allopathic, or Western, medicine. In fact, the oldest texts referring to non-conventional medicine can be traced back to 2100 BCE in Ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Middle East). Nowadays, more than 65% of the world’s population relies on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as their primary form of healthcare. According to the Journal of American Medical Association. Alternative healing practices focus on the mind-body connection, that is the mind is not separate from the body or spirit and involves reinforcing and stimulating the body to heal itself rather than just treating the symptoms of the illness.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) originated in ancient China and dates back more than 2500 years. A basic belief of TCM is that the body’s vital life energy, or chi, flows through channels, or “meridians”, to various parts of the body (e.g. muscles, organs, nerves, other biological systems). According to TCM, if the flow of chi is disrupted, symptoms of illness or diseases occur specifically around the part of the body where the chi is obstructed. Therefore, it is believed that any ailment can be treated by removing the blockage and restoring the flow of chi. TCM encompasses many different practices which include herbal medicine, therapeutic massage (tui na), exercise (tai chi and qi gong), and dietary therapy. Acupuncture is also part of TCM and in this practice, thin metal needles are inserted into the skin in an attempt to unblock congested meridians thus allowing chi to flow freely throughout the body.

Energy Medicine

Energy medicine is a type of alternative healing practice that views energy as a vital, living, moving force, that is involved in determining health and well-being. The key purpose of energy healing is to change the frequency of the body’s three main structures in energy anatomy which are fields, channels, and centers. The alternative healing paradigm states that humans are, in essence, energetic and informational beings consisting of complex, rapid communication channels in the connective tissue matrix capable of affecting tissues, cellular processes, and even nuclear DNA expression. Until recently, Western medical practitioners generally disregarded this notion that human beings are energy beings. Nevertheless, this is now changing, and a new branch of academic and clinical research is opening in the area of energy healing. Under energy healing, energy can be defined as “information that vibrates”. The energy of human life, referred to as manna, may express itself in many ways, such as patterns, sounds, and thoughts. The terms energy medicine, energetic healing, biofield healing, chakra healing, meridian-based healing, vibrational medicine, and other similar titles simply refer to practices which involve certain vibrational or frequency-based level of energy healing. Energy medicine is a domain that deals with energy fields of two types which are:

1. Energies that can be measured known as veritable energies which include vibrations and electromagnetic forces; and,

2. Energies that are difficult to measure known as putative energies (a.k.a. subtle energies or biofields). These energy fields are thought to explain the presence of vital life energy. [Note: this vital energy is not unique to energy medicine – it has different names corresponding to different traditions which include chi in TCM, doshas in Ayurvedic medicine, and prana in Yoga, just to name a few].

Energy medicine practitioners propose that illness is due to imbalances in the subtle energies (the biofield).  That is when the energy flow of the subtle energy fields is blocked or distorted, a healthy balance cannot be maintained, and states of the disease become evident. Energy medicine therapies are gentle, non-invasive techniques that help balance a person’s energy field and accelerate healing of the body, mind, and spirit. Examples of energy medicine therapies include therapeutic touch, healing touch, Reiki, reflexology, and craniosacral therapy.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils to help promote emotional, physical, and spiritual healing. Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile liquids distilled or pressed from plants and flowers. In fact, it takes a large amount of plant material to make a small quantity of essential oil. For example, to make 300g of rose oil one would need one ton of rose petals.

The use of aromatic essences for medicinal, ritual, religious, culinary, cosmetic, and economic purposes can be dated back about 6000 years. Essential oils should only be used externally via diffusers, topical applications, and baths.
Modern research demonstrates that essential oils are beneficial to the body as they influence hormone and neurotransmitter levels, organ function, antioxidant activity and defenses, immune function, and cellular behavior. Did you know that essentials oils have a bioelectrical frequency? Clinical research has shown that essential oils have a frequency range of 52-320 MHz and that they have the potential to raise the frequency of the human body to a normal healthy level (62-68 MHz) when needed

Bach Flower Essences

Bach Flower Essences were developed in the 1930s by noted homeopath Edward Bach in England. All Bach flower essences, except for Rock Water (which comes from rock springs), are made from flowers using either the “sun” or “boiling” method. Both methods remove the plant matter and according to Bach the vibration or energy of the flower is transmitted to the tincture. Bach flower essences work primarily on the psyche and there are thirty-eight remedies that address one of seven psychological causes of illness that are: fear, uncertainty, lack of interest in present situations, loneliness, oversensitive to influences and ideas, hopelessness, and excessive care for the wellbeing of others.
In an age where people increasingly turn to holistic healing methods, it is important to understand the basics and benefits of various alternative healing practices available.

Meditation

Essentially Meditation it is a practice where one focuses their attention and quiets their mind in order to increase awareness of the present moment. Meditation has been a part of many cultures for thousands of years. In fact, archeologists found images of people sitting in meditation postures from the Indus Valley civilization dating from about 5000-3000 BCE. Currently, millions of people around the world meditate and with regular meditation various health, physiological, and psychological benefits may occur which include: improve airflow to the lungs, increased level of energy, decreased blood pressure, decreased muscle tension, decreased pain, and pain perception, improved mental and emotional health, reduced anxiety and stress, improved sleep, decreased tendency to worry, increased mindfulness, decreased fear, just to name a few. During meditation, the physical body goes into a state of deep muscle relaxation while the person remains awake. Moreover, the Dalai Lama stated that through meditation people can train their minds to leave negative thoughts and generate and enhance positive thoughts. Meditation seems to work by affecting the autonomic nervous system of the brain which regulates many organs and muscles that control functions such as heartbeat, breathing, and digestion. Interestingly, meditation was one of the first mind-body practices adopted by mainstream health care providers. How does one meditate? There are many meditation techniques but the most common are deep breathing, focusing on the body, walking meditation, mindful meditation, and transcendental meditation.

Yoga

Yoga can be traced back 5000 years ago to India and is a philosophy based on creating harmony between the body, mind, and spirit. It encourages mental equilibrium, promotes energy flow throughout the body, and enhances physical strength, stamina, and health. There are many types of Yoga; however, Hatha Yoga (the yoga of physical discipline) is the one most commonly practiced in the West. Hatha Yoga allows one to gain control over their body through performing poses (asanas) and through breath control (pranayama). Once the body is managed, the person can turn their attention to controlling their mind through meditation. There are many benefits to Yoga which include improving flexibility, stamina, and concentration, increase awareness of the body, improve digestion and elimination processes, help reduce excess fat, improve posture, promote a positive and happy attitude, and improve circulation and skin tone.

Ayurverda

Ayurveda, or the science of life, is a holistic and natural system of health that originated in India more than 5000 years ago. Regarded by some as the oldest medical system in the world, Ayurveda’s teachings are ageless. The philosophy of Ayurveda is to optimize your health through techniques that care for the body, mind, spirit, and environment. Ayurveda assesses your state of being and the state of the natural world in terms of three basic bioenergetic forces, or doshas. The doshas are Vata (a combination of the elements ether and air), pitta (a combination of the elements fire and water), and Kapha (both water and earth elements). Each individual has a unique body based on a combination of these three doshas. According to Ayurveda, health is harmony in the mind, body, and spirit and to remain a healthy doshic balance is important. Additionally, Ayurveda teachings promote techniques where the body can support its own healing and become well enough to prevent symptoms from reoccurring and avoid the development of disease through proper nutrients (including herbal remedies), diet, and mind-body exercises. In fact, Yoga is considered to be a major part of Ayurveda.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy was founded in 1796 by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann and evaluates the whole person taking into account the physical, emotional, and mental symptoms. It is based on the principle that “like cures like”. What does this mean? It means that a person suffering from symptoms can be treated by remedies consisting of a substance (such as mineral, animal, or plant) that is able to produce the same symptoms in a healthy person. The homeopathic remedies contain an infinitesimal amount of the substance as large doses could be toxic. Exposing the body to the substance, a healing response from the body is triggered thus stimulating the body’s innate ability to heal itself. According to the Homeopathy Research Institute, over 200 million people regularly use homeopathy around the world and it is actually included in the national health systems of a number of countries which include Brazil, India, Chile, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

ICs can be regarded as the evolution of homeopathy for the 21st century. ICs work by stimulating the body’s own healing abilities. It is possible to transfer ICs to water and then by consuming this water, deliver the information to the body to promote self-healing.
